Equity action planning

The Equity Action Plan (EAP) will give UVic a set of universal goals and actions to advance equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. The plan will also guide different groups within the UVic community as they develop targeted actions.

"As the executive leadership team, we are preparing to support, advance and implement an Equity Action Plan that centres the experiences and raises the voices of the individuals and groups who have experienced the greatest barriers at UVic. We are excited about the process and committed to the outcomes."

Thank you for engaging

From January to May 2022, the UVic community shared stories, experiences, advice and recommendations for building a more equitable university. We've listened and know there are many barriers we must work to address. The Equity Action Plan will launch in Fall 2022.

Phase 1: Design engagement

(completed Jan. 2022)

For our initial engagement, we wanted to know how to best consult our campus community.

We heard overwhelmingly that people want to give their feedback and suggestions for ways to advance equity, diversity and inclusion at UVic. They asked to participate through online surveys as well as face-to-face meetings and discussions.

Phase 2: What is our desired future?

(completed Feb.-Mar. 2022)

We invited the UVic community to share with us what it would look like for equity to exist at UVic, what it would take for everyone to have a sense of belonging on campus and what it would require for the university to be truly diverse. Read the latest summary report to see the themes that emerged when we envisioned the future of equity, diversity and belonging on campus.

Phase 3: Identifying barriers

(completed Mar. 2022)

We wanted to better understand what barriers to equity, diversity and inclusion exist at UVic so that we can collectively develop strategies to address them. In order to do this, we asked our campus community to engage in dialogue and share their stories through Conversation Cafés and an online survey.

Phase 4: Identifying goals & objectives

(completed May 2022)

Based on the ideas, stories and feedback we received during the first three phases of engagement and building on UVic's strategic vision to embed equity in all that we do, the Reflection and Challenge Committee drafted five universal goals. This online survey provided an opportunity for our community to give us feedback as we continue to assess and refine these goals and determine priorities for action.

Action Lab Pilot

Action Labs are an action-oriented approach to tackling complex challenges that require change at the systems level (as opposed to the individual or interpersonal level). In April, Equity and Human Rights hosted a pilot to try out this tool and determine its place within the Equity Action Plan. A group of staff, students and faculty met twice this spring to identify solution ideas to a barrier identified through the EAP engagement. Read more about the pilot.

Equity Action Plan Launch

Now that engagement has wrapped up, we are reviewing all of the community input to finalize the plan's goals and start developing targeted actions to move us towards these goals and address the barriers identified by our community. We are looking forward to sharing the outcome of our collective work this fall with the launch of UVic's first Equity Action Plan.

Territory acknowledgement

We acknowledge and respect the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples on whose traditional territory the University of Victoria stands, and the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

We invite you to learn about the lands on which UVic stands and on which you are situated. One way to do this is to watch UVic’s territorial acknowledgment video.
